World War1 issue model 1903 ROCK ISLAND. This rifle is in exceptional condition, the metal surfaces are smooth and free of rust or pitting. All markings are sharp and distinct. The bore is bright and shiny with strong lands and grooves. This stock is free of any cracks, it exhibits sharp finger grooves and has a bare minimum of dents or bruises. The 3 cartouches on the stock are a AAR over a SADAL over the original 1918 stamp, WES. The stock also has three firing proofs on the bottom behind the trigger guard. This rifle has been through 2 rebuilds after it was manufactured. A correct " High hump" hand guard is present. The RIA barrel date December 1917 is over the letter A. Obviously the metal surfaces have been refinished presumably at Springfield armory. The serial number of this 1903 is recorded in the database as being returned with others to Springfield Armory in August of 1918 from the 318th Engineer Battalion [These are the guys that strung the barbed wire in front of the trenches] of the 6th Infantry Division stationed in France. A true World War1 veteran with a lot of history.
